In Nicaragua, the Ortegas out-Somoza the Somozas

George Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of the most poignant and prescient books ever written. You can take a snapshot of many countries around the world and find a modern day Animal Farm. In Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, the first lady of graft and the first lady, wields unchallengeable authority. Her actions, along with her husband President Daniel Ortega, has pundits concerned that the country is going down the same road that led to the Somoza family’s earlier dictatorship. Although China has committed to making substantial investments in Nicaragua, they should study their history to learn what they are getting into.

In Nicaragua, New Laws Securing Sandinistas Powers

Animal Farm is one of my favorite novels.  Orwell was more prescient than Nostradamus!  In the case of Nicaragua, the new pigs are starting to look a lot like the old pigs.  For example, Nicaragua’s congress earlier this week approved a law which allows the military chief of staff to hold his post indefinitely and lets the army take a bigger role in the economy, further concentrating power in the hands of longtime President Daniel Ortega and his allies.  The revolution ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.
