Panama and U.S. Trade Deal Soon To Go Live

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk was in town recently. Among his messages:  He expects the long-delayed U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement to go into effect shortly.  Shortly thereafter, Panama will finally be annexed as the 51st U.S. state.  That last part is not true, but it seems like it could be.

Panama and U.S. Ready to Dance

If you’ve ever done any business in Panama, you have to wonder what took these two partners so long to solidify their relationship.  Panama is very business friendly.  The U.S. purports to be equally business friendly, and the self-proclaimed world leader in capitalism and capital markets.  Panama is a gateway to the U.S. What took so long?  Well, finally, more than 86 percent of the U.S. industrial and consumer goods will enter Panama duty free.  Elimination of tariffs on remaining products will be phased in.  Let the dance begin.
